Finding Grace on #FallbackDay

Today is #FallbackDay in North America.  As in the day our clocks fall back for daylight savings time. It’s also the day I’ve claimed to reflect on our fallbacks – our unceremonious falls from our normal capacities to show up bigger…to ourselves, to those around us, to the world at large.

I launched #Fallbook last year on this day. And, I had big plans to launch some new #GhostLight offerings today, too.

Alas, life is what happens when we’re busy making plans.  And life’s unfolding knocked me for a loop this week. So much so that it was a full two hours after waking that I realized that our time changed and went into a panic that we had missed my daughter’s first basketball game before realizing we actually had an extra hour.  And only then did I realize that it was also Fallback Day, the day I had made plans and promises about…that I would not be fulfilling.

There are countless times in my history that this kind of knocking for a loop would turn into a full-on falling back for me. But this time, having noticed, and reflected upon the value I hold that my would-be #fallback is protecting, I was able to make a different choice.  A choice to acknowledge and honor the #ResponsibleOne – the one that makes a commitment and follows through no matter what the cost…to me, to others.  And having done so, a choice to set aside the old script and make room for the new in which #PetetheCat and #LolaBrigida take the lead.

So today there will be no new program offerings announced.

Instead, there is #acceptance and #grace. And an invitation to you to reflect upon the scenes of your life this past year, since the last Fallback Day, and notice the times when grace took the stage.  What were the circumstances? What were the scenes? What did that feel like in your body? In your soul?  What did making space for grace give you? What did it give others?  Can you sink into that experience and let it fill you up and hold you?

This is my wish for you, for me, for all of us on this Fallback Day.  I wish you grace.

[The inspiration to proclaim Daylight Saving Time as Fallback Day came from my friend and visual artist and sense-maker extraordinaire, Kate Rutter.]
